Enter the doctoral candidacy list of the TUM School of Life Sciences
The entry in the doctoral candidacy list is the official start of your doctorate. At the same time your membership at TUM GS and the GZW beginns.
The whole doctoral candidacy list of the TUM is subdivided into the doctoral candidacy lists of the schools and other degree-awarding institutions. Depending on the membership of your supervisior in a school or other degree-awarding institution of TUM your list entry is determined. To enter the doctoral candidacy list you have to choose a graduate center of the TUM Graduate School to become a member there. Most doctoral candidates of the TUM School of Life Sciences are a member of the Graduate Center Weihenstephan.
The Graduate Center Weihenstephan is on the one hand a part of the TUM Graduate School and on the other hand a unit of the TUM School of Life Sciences. To support all doctoral candidates of the TUM School of Life Sciences in the best way, the Graduate Center Weihenstephan offers a demand-oriented qualification program, which fits the requirements of the TUM Graduate School and is adapted to local needs. As a member of Graduate Center Weihenstephan you are a member of TUM Graduate School, too.
Short overview of the process "Entry in the doctoral candidacy list of the TUM School of Life Sciences":
1. Find a supervisor.

2. Find a mentor or take your time.
If you haven´t decided for a mentor yet, you can register her or him max 6 months after your entry in the doctoral candidacy list. At the menue item “Announcement Mentor” we show how it works.
3. Enter the doctoral candidates list with DocGS.
You find a detailed instruction at the homepage of the TUM GS.
4. Fill in the supervision agreement together with your supervisor.

Use or Fill-in help for your superviesion agreement.
5. Now submit all necessary documents together with the supervision agreement and for all employees of TUM a copy of your working contract at the Graduate Center Weihenstephan. The documents required are listed in your “Application for the Acceptance of Doctoral Candidates” in DocGS. Submitting an exposé is optional.
6. We review your documents and contact you if something is missing or we have any questions.
Your international qualification will now be examined. At the same time you will be entered in the preliminary doctoral candidacy list, and with that you become a preliminary member of the TUM GS. When your degree has been approved by TUM, you will be entered to the official doctoral candidacy list
7. After you successfully have entered the doctoral candidacy list of the TUM School of Life Sciences you receive a confirmation email from DocGS.

For many TUM services you need access to TUMonline (TUM ID). As an employee, you will get this automatically on your first day of work. Enrolled doctoral candidates receive access automatically, too. For all others, TUMonline access must be set up as an "external scientist". To do this, please contact the TUMonline responsible person at your chair or us gzw[at]wzw.tum.de.
Internal or external doctoral candidate?
INTERNAL are doctoral candidates who are employed at TUM as research/teaching associates (min. 25%, please submit a copy of your working contract of TUM together with the documents for the entry of the doctoral candidacy list) and doctoral candidates who receive a scholarship AND have a permanent workplace at TUM.
EXTERNAL are doctoral candidates who are employed at another employer, doctoral candidates who receive a scholarship AND have NO permanent workplace at TUM as well as self-financed ones.
